Child Protection Bill passed in parliament
The Child Protection Bill was passed in parliament on 10 May 2011. The Bill strengthens the Crimes Act to protect children from violence and neglect. “The Crimes Amendment Bill (No2) recognizes that children are among the most vulnerable members of society and deserve special protection,” Justice Minister Simon Power said.
The bill has been referred to the Social Services Select Committee for public submissions. The summary of changes to the bill can be read here. In effect, the Bill will see stronger repercussions for parents, wh?nau and guardians in a household who fail to protect children from sexual assault and serious physical harm.
